The Clinical Evaluation of Liver Biopsy

Abstract
Liver biopsy has so far had its widest application clinically and has become one of the main diagnostic tools in the differential diagnosis of a wide range of liver disease. PIt has been of great value in the diagnosis of liver disease, the evaluation of therapy, and the determination of the proper disposition of patients.
The clinical study was performed on the analysis of 314 liver biopsies of patients who had been admitted to the department of internal medicine, Korea University Hospital from March 1974 to April 1979.
The results were summarized as follow.
1. Of the 314 liver biopsies adequate specimens were obtained in 95.8% (301cases), inadequate specimens 1.9% (6 cases) and failure 2.3% (7 cases).
2. Clinical diagnosis before biopsy were histologically confirmed by liver biopsy in`32 cases (80.0%) of 40 ones with acute hepatitis, in 42 cases (54.5%) of 77 ones chronic hepatitis, in 13 cases (24.5%) of 55 ones with liver cirrhosis, in 63 cases (76.0%) of 83 ones with neoplasm of the liver, in 11 cases (73.3%) of 15 ones with obstructive jaundice, in 7 cases (58.3%) of 12 cases with miscellaneous disease respectively. Therefore, the accordance with diagnosis after liver,, biopsies was 60.10 (181 cases) of total 301 cases and 85.7%(279 cases) of total 301 ones were obviously aided in diagnosis through liver biopsy.
3. Serious complications of needle biopsy were noted in 0.96% of 314 cases; intraperitoneal hemorrhage, bile peritonitis and pneumonia 1 cases respectively.
